After a 318is E36 and E46 318i was chosen a 320da E90 after a test drive that has made quite an impression

After a 318is E36 and E46 318i was chosen a 320da E90 after a test drive that has made quite an impression. The previous petrol cars just drove smoothly but oil heater with 163 hp and nearly twice as much torque you can safely call soon.

The machine will switch quickly and smoothly but by
sudden gas movements, such as when overtaking, sometimes "cooling off period" required after the car is catapulted forward in the right gear. Beforehand choose the ideal gear to overtake can also, poker left and pushing forward or backward. A vending machine is somehow a relief in urban and congested.

The handling is an ideal compromise between sporty and comfortable. No noise from the suspension on bad roads where this was once the case with the E36 and E46. The observation of many that the run-flat tires cause a lot of road noise I can not confirm at this 16-inch rubber. General noise level inside is indeed remarkably low.

In terms of options, the car reasonably complete. Parking sensors front and rear, combined with i-Drive are almost a must because of the confusing body. The central monitor indicates very clearly where the obstacles are located in combination with the obligatory beeps. The automatic air conditioning, I can be brief: it works perfectly!
The Business navigation is fairly basic, with no map so only arrows and voice guidance but actually you have enough here. The instructions are very clear displays with large symbols and if the route file by eg an accident or work will be reported via TMC.

Some of the findings and / or points of criticism:

-The consumption continued stabbing at 7.3 l / 100 km which is not bad value for a machine with conventional torque converter. The air conditioning also is always on and is driven little highway.

Duration of purchase (options ...) but relatively low maintenance costs.

-Oliepeilen Is difficult, the position of the dipstick is quite far back gauge and 3 times usually gives three different levels ...

-Here and there dare sometimes some cracking in the interior.
Not that there's a constant rumble but I did not with the E46 318i. Maybe some firmer suspension and ditto tires are partly responsible for this.

-It Looks like the paint is susceptible to damage by stones or bird droppings. The E36 and E46 were in that area perfectly. The E46 was 8 years old and had a paint that still looked like new. The E90 has here and there all damage caused by bird droppings, although it is always moved very quickly. Waxing is regularly the message!

So far not had any real problems, but was allowed to change in here, I'll take care of the necessary updates!
Self solve small problems ... (63,000 km)As a big car enthusiast you will have more eye an ear for small annoying things to your cart that one of A to B driver will never notice. About Last noticed that when turning the steering wheel at low speeds (parking) a kind of resistance was palpable.
When a full steering wheel rotation, there were 2 or 3 tactile, and sometimes audible hitches present. All do not mind but I'm still only ever been to search where it may lie in and came out with the toothed control rod entering and extends in the longitudinal arrangement controlling the steering column. BMW service bulletin on this little ailment speaks lubricating the rod. Then it belongings well greased and there is nothing more noticeable!

A rattle in the interior have I also got away in one go. Actually it was more like a squeaking noise from the footwell driver. Just above the handle to open the bonnet touch the soft dashboard hard protective plate left in the footwell. Just stick a piece of felt between them and no more annoying squeak on uneven road surfaces.

There is me a strange thing noticed: with the door open, it is impossible to automatically close the window. You must continue to serve the button so. Perhaps this is to prevent you from inadvertently pinch your hand or other body part?

Next week the car for a week to his homeland Germany can and I again fucked in the band farmer to balance the wheels. At 140 km / h was a slight vibration in the seat and felt this was due to imbalance in the rear. 40 gram imbalance, probably lost a little weight. Up to 180 km / h (at a nearly empty highway at night) no trace of vibration. We'll wait until Germany to repeat this again!
Autobahn Cruiser (65,000 km)After 1000 kilometers traveled in Germany is my rating still risen for this car. Cruising at 170-180 km / h comes with such ease and tranquility that you wonder if there is effectively a 2-liter diesel engine under the hood. Then the highway and take a series of hairpin bends at a brisk pace is not really a challenge, the chassis and the necessary electronics keep the car so tight on the track that the fun factor is actually disappears. Even with DTC on the backburner you must already go to great lengths to point out any upset.
Nothing but praise so on the driveability of the Germans.

In terms of problems, there is really nothing to say. After 15000 km I notice no excessive oil on the dipstick level is a few mm below the max mark. The fuel consumption was traveling 5.9 l / 100 km and it has a range of 1,000 km with 75% motorways. Nicely for a car that puts passengers and baggage at the 1700 kg on the scale. The air conditioning was always on and the driving style was comforting to as smoothly!
Loyal quadricycle (70,000 km)Meanwhile, there are added only 5,000 km in nine months because the son is now closer to home is in school and my wife do every day not yet 25 km by car. The bulk of it is urban, resulting in a significant increase in consumption to 7.8 l / 100 km which we obviously do not lie awake. The consumption value in traffic, according to the manual 9.1 l / 100 km, a realistic value methinks. Meanwhile, the first meeting with replacement pollen filter behind. 120 Euros to an independent BMW specialist around here is a lot less than what charges the official dealer ...

Problems they do not report it, also the oil consumption is almost negligible. 15000 KM is the level of just a few millimeters dropped on the dipstick. In the winter I could not resist even by drifting a thick layer of snow after the control of the ABS / DSC indicated that a wheel sensor pulses gave no clear lake. Showed that there was a lot of snow remain hanging in the wheel this became upset and left rear wheel sensor. After removing the lumps of snow disappeared notified and everything was back to normal.

Driving it of course remains blessed, especially if you then have a boring FWD with loud nailing TDI grinder comes back in your car. A breath of fresh air!
Short distances. (78,000 km)A year and 8000 km later to report no shocking news. Al was a while idling hear a ticking sound from under the hood. This turned out to come from the crankshaft, a large disc of metal and rubber on the crankshaft sprocket. Although there was nothing to be seen of wear nevertheless caused it the ticking sound. The garage owner had it in stock, and carried out the repair under warranty. This sometimes appears to occur in this type of engine. We doing enough mileage to can me really not care to drive a diesel, even with consumption already 1 in 12. This is mainly due to the short journeys that my wife makes some longer term ever for a clogged particulate filter would can provide. We'll see!
killed Glow Candle. (88,000 km)After the temperatures took a dip last week, I noticed that the engine which ran irregularly the first few seconds after a cold start. Read out and one incandescent candle was faulty, but then immediately 4 new stabbing and leave the engine running again very smooth at low outdoor temperatures. In total, with hourly wages I paid 150 Euros which is the first cost is out of the ordinary maintenance. Further still extremely satisfied with this German.
New alternator and glow candle module. (96,000 km)On the last vehicle inspection, which was immaculate, I found that there was a slight humming noise from under the hood. On closer inspection showed this to arise from the alternator in which possibly a power diode had given up the ghost. See no error messages via OBD but as a precaution I still only have a new alternator. When reading out still did come to light that was up to the control unit of the glow candles to be replaced. This part of 70 euros is required for a quick cold start and also helps to regulate the emission and regeneration of the particulate filter. Important to replace defective so.
My mechanic told me that most people stay with it driving around as long as the car just started. Sin...
iDrive + taillight wiring defect (110.000 km)Our 320d is now 10 years old but still looks young. Underneath there were some problems I can solve themselves. The wiring that runs to the lamp unit via the boot was damaged in several places which appeared regularly errors about broken bulbs. The conscious wires are repaired and reinforced with tape and tubing. No more error messages for over a year. It occurred to me recently that the iDrive knob to the 'pressure' command wanted to run no more. I solved this by the optical switch to solder again with a very fine point. A new power cord from starter to incandescent candle relay runs I go places soon. The connector falters leaving preheated is not regularly despite new glow candles and module.
