After Microsoft and Apple, Google is now ready to replace your desktop with a tablet

After Microsoft and Apple, Google is now ready to replace your desktop with a tablet. The Pixel C is the first tablet from Google, so the expectations are high. Google will own the hardware and the software, so everything works together perfectly. Or so you would say.

We sit there apparently waiting for, because everyone makes one: a tablet that will replace our desktop. Microsoft Surface, which runs full Windows 10 but - despite the tablet mode - as a tablet is substandard. Apple released the iPad Pro, which is fantastic as a tablet but certainly can not replace a desktop. And now Google is trying it with Pixel C. The Pixel team again not disappoint
The Pixel C is beautifully designed. The Pixels team has - after the Chromebook Pixel - again showed a clever piece of design skills. There are no foreign misplaced buttons and lines as we often see in other Android tablets. And despite being a bit on the thick side feels the tablet is not large or heavy. Especially when it is linked to the keyboard.

There are some little geeky things that make a beautiful whole. So you can tap twice on the back to see how full your battery is and light it up in Google's colors, if you are using the tablet.

The keyboard is magnetically attached to the Pixel C.
So far, the Pixel team we have never been disappointed, and the pixel C is no exception. The keyboard (which must be purchased separately for about 170 euros). It is compact, but fine type. You never have to charge and connect via Bluetooth . The tablet clicks onto it by means of a magnet. A very strong magnet. In fact, a lot of effort to pull away from him again. The hinge is perhaps even stronger, which means you have full control over the angle of the screen relative to the keyboard. However, it is not possible to use the keyboard with another device, because it first switches on if there is associated with a Pixel C.

Is the Android team leave?
With three gigabytes of RAM, a very capable Nvidia X1 64-bit processor and a 10,2inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1800 pixels, Google promises a lot of strength and especially speed. And you definitely should expect with such specs. This makes it particularly strange that I encountered (particularly with these specs unforgivable) delays in easily use. Especially when starting (and switch between) apps. It seems that the Android team is still not quite know how to fully exploit the power of the processor.

Google's own music app can not be used in landscape mode.
Also, apps nauwelijks- or not optimized. This allows for an enormous amount of empty space and makes working with the pixel C does not productively on. This is perhaps forgivable when it comes to third-party apps, although I think Google developers should encourage better for Android to develop tablets, but even standard Google apps do not use the screen size. For example, Google Docs seems to think I'm on a phone and working example, Google Play Music is not in landscape mode - what the app is virtually unusable when you work with the keyboard.

Nor is it to use the "Ok Google feature is off the screen, while Pixel C does have built four microphones so you should use the function from the other side of the room. also lacks a split view mode and is connected to the keyboard sometimes unstable. Whatever the reason may be, it is unacceptable. And not just a little bit.

Many apps are not optimized for a larger screen.
Conclusion
What the team of Android exactly is doing, for me is a complete mystery. It ensures in any case that a device with great hardware and premium design feels like a second tablet. It does not justify the price of 500 euros - for the same price there are plenty of tablets available that are more than worth the money. The Pixel team has done a set of innovative hardware, but it's time that Android overtakes even the huge backlog.
